What happens when Royal Mail gets privatised? Prices will hike, rivals will price fix (happened with the utilities) rural areas will never get any mail... What hope is there for polish?

I hope Richard Branson steps in... Although if he buys Virgin Mail and then sells it off as he's done before, it will end up a crap service.

I am a vulture as I am considering if I should buy some shares when possible.

It will be like the utilities - all good in the early days, make money out of it and then it will start going bad, poor unregulated service and expensive to boot. Make money out of it, need it for the price hikes

Does anyone remember the gas adverts - where bill or something?

I think you need to register with a stockbroker, I have some through my work but they organise it, I just sign and pay lol.

Won't apple be quite expensive and not make much? Thought you needed a company that was crap or doing okay - and releases something amazing or gets bought out so the share prices rise and then you cash in?

I wouldn't be buying apple shares, as I think their most recent offering will either kill or cure them.

Bloomsbury is a fair bet with the rumours of a new Harry Potter book in the making.

The prices for apple drop after they've announced the new iPhone as people moan it's rubbish but normally pick up around Xmas. However I generally know sod all about stocks and shares, just thought it always sounded quite fun!! Lol

I haven't got a clue about stocks and shares, the new episodes of Skins intrigued me!

They were talking about the mail thing on the news this morning and the guy said that they hope to keep prices reasonable. Since when is £2.60 to post one bottle of polish reasonable??

I hold no hopes. The fact they tried to give a rail network, the west coast to a company that always under performs, runs a shoddy service yet still makes profits shows all they care about is money and who will give a back hand to the government - once its privatised any promises at keeping prices low and customer service high will be out the window.

Didn't know that about apple prices - that's interesting I just thought they'd always stay pretty high.

I hate privatisation - it's VITAL that services like the Royal Mail put social contribution above profit, and like hell are private companies going to do that.

Privatisation just makes no sense to me. I'm a mathematician and horribly logical, and the maths seems simple.
cost to do the job = £A
public funded company therefore needs to get in £A.
private company needs £A PLUS whatever profit they want to show.

Yes there's issues of efficiency but what law of nature says a private company will be more efficient?

Also - its all very well with non essential things - if I don't like the price of that bar of chocolate or bottle of nailvarnish I can decide - stuff it I just won't bother, or stuff it I will shop elsewhere.
With the train I can hardly decide - stuff it I'll not bother (to go to work) or stuff it I'll use another company (that doesn't actually pass through here)
Its even worse than privatised energy - at least there's some competition there, although the fact the same company charges different prices in dfferent parts of the country rather buggers it up.
