Horrible peely nails :(
Gahhhhhhh!
Both my thumb, index and middle fingers are peeling terribly - my ring fingers are so weak at the top For some reason my ring and little fingers are growing like weeds as per usual and haven't even cracked, but they are more brittle feeling than usual.
Is there anything I can eat or put on them to help them stop? I'm reluctant to put strengthening polishes because they don't seem to really work and I'm trying to take a couple of weeks off painting them with anything.

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
Thinking aloud - I have some sea kelp tablets upstairs, would they do anything? They're good for hair growth so I guess it's the same thing?
Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I've heard sea kelp works well. I've also used OPI nail envy which worked for me and I've heard wonderful things about Leighton Denny's treatments such as renovate but if you don't want to try polishes and stuff then I think the sea kep or some other tablets/vitamins could help - apparently iron tablets help too
Re: Horrible peely nails :(
My nails have been peeling a bit so I'm taking sea kelp and I've just started using Jessica Fusion which is specifically for peeling nails. Hopefully it will work! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Thankfully my sea kelp is still in date! Runs out next June. Fingers crossed... I might put some Sally Hansen strength treatment on them x

I wouldn't go for a strengthening topcoat, you need one specifically for peeling nails. OPI Nail Envy Sensitive & Peeling or Nailtiques Formula 2 should do the trick.

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I have the same problem . I tried OPI Nail Envy for months and it didn't make any difference at all. I am using a normal base coat again and they are no better or worse. I have read that Biotin supplements help a lot but some people get breakouts of spots as a side effect, so I haven't been brave enough to try that yet! I have made my own cuticle oil based on jojoba oil which is supposed to be absorbed into the nail easily and make them stronger, but whether it gets through polish is doubtful? I have been using it for a couple of weeks now and my cuticles are a lot better so hopefully it will help my nails too.
My next hope is to see if wearing gel polish helps to grow my nails a bit longer! Good luck! xx

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I'm having problems with peeling too I've been using nail envy sensitive & peeling for a good couple of months with no real improvement so I guess it's time to give up on that and try something else.
Rather than spending a load of money on something else that might not work, I was wondering is if anyone in the same situation fancied doing a swap? I've got 2/3 of a bottle of nail envy sensitive & peeling (and similar amounts of a couple of other things) that doesn't work for me - anyone interested in swapping for something that doesn't work for them?

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I don't have anything to offer I'm afraid, but I'm a fellow peeler
I use regular nail envy, but instead of trying to hang on to the layers I gently peel them back, smooth them with the rough side of the buffer and buff until all of the roughness has gone from the affected area and it's all glossy and smooth. I'm lucky that my nails are quite thick - usually this stops the nail from breaking and catching, but polish can crack along the 'fault line' or area of weakness after 2 - 3 days of wear. I also layer Seche for extra strength and always use at least three coats of polish and one generous coat of base.

Thanks Loola - I've tried the same thing, but my nails really aren't thick enough for that to work

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I'm still battling with peeling nails. I do the same - peel off and buff but they are really thin afterwards. I use Orly Nail Repair just on the thin bendy bits of nail. You brush on the nail glue part of the kit, then dip your nail in the powder, let it dry, then buff until smooth ( it is pretty hard to get a really smooth finish but a big peel shows under varnish too so...) It makes your nail pretty strong and hard so at least polish lasts longer and nails are far less likely to break. I do have to redo it pretty much every time I take my polish off but it does help my nails not to break quite so quickly!
The UV gel I tried didn't help at all and chipped as quickly as normal polish so that went back to QVC!
I am also trying Duri Rejuvacote at the moment which has very good reviews. Too soon to say if it helps xx

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I will try to remember! I can only hope it works better than Nail Envy! To be fair, my job is so hard on my nails, nothing stands much of a chance lol. I would reccommend the Nail Repair though - its a pain to do but it makes your nails so much stronger (temporarily!) xx

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
Thanks Carter, I'm going to have a look at the Orly stuff, it sounds like it might help me
There's a great example of one of my buffed dints under the 'what are you wearing today' thread! I'm reading the reviews for the Rejuvacote too - I'm thinking, can a topical product ever really strengthen your nails? Or should I admit defeat and patch up with the Orly?
Then I read about the Duracote users that experienced pain when using it - it doesn't put me off, quite the opposite - maybe it does actually do something?!!!!
Both seem to be about £12 - Decisions decisions.......!

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
*Cough* Well, my nails are back! They're growing lovely at the moment - probably because I haven't painted them in about two months though :/ I'm reluctant to paint them as much as I used to now that they're growing nicely again. One nail (left index) is still very peely, and I have no idea why but the others are really nice now
Re: Horrible peely nails :(
Well, no difference so far with the Duri, but, to be fair, I have only been using as a base coat and not a top coat too... I think I have to resign myself to the fact that I can only grow my nails when I'm on holiday from work . I am still having to use the Orly rescue stuff first as well - without that, the tips of my nails are so thin, the polish chips off straight away.LoolaBeanbag wrote:Thanks Carter, I'm going to have a look at the Orly stuff, it sounds like it might help me

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
I've been using Nailtiques for years. My nails are very peely without it. I use Formula 2 though, rather than 2+ which she uses in that video. I just use it as a base coat now and they never peel. A couple of times I've stopped using it, but within a few weeks they're peeling again. I've used Nail Envy (sensitive & peeling) in the past as well. That's good but I still had some peeling with that.

Re: Horrible peely nails :(
You can usually pick it up on Amazon, or beautybay.com. It's not cheap, I pay about £15 for the 15ml bottle but that lasts me at least 6 months. You could get a smaller bottle first to see if it works for you.
