Argh No

Been looking on New Look for some new dresses for my birthday, but absolutely everything seems to be either a bodycon dress or is 100% polyester so it has no stretch or give in it, or is some figure hugging midi dress thing

Now I am not a small girl and I know what does and doesn't look good - at a size 16-18 I wouldn't dream of even TRYING one of those fitted "midi" dresses that seems to be in fashion at the moment.

I just wanted to moan really that there's fuck all in the shops. And now I'm having a mini meltdown about being a fatty (while eating a bacon sandwich Very Happy )!

Fashion always knows how to make you feel really bad about yourself Sad

what about one of these?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

My sister is about your size, and she has one and it looks bloody lovely. She can dress it up with heels etc, or dress it down with a pair of leggings under and tights.

I tried one on, I looked like a dressed up pig. But, thats probably because I look like I ate you Very Happy

See this brings me on to another whine - I'm a 16 usually (sometimes 18 in certain styles/materials) but a 16 in a "plus size" range is too big for me.

WHUUUUUUT.

That is a really cute dress though. I'm tempted to get a 16 to try...

I think New Look are particularly talented at making you feel like crap. I'll always pick up like 10 dresses to try on and every single one will look like shit... I don't know how they do it. And they're all so flipping short on me, and I'm only 5ft4!

Oh my god I so feel your pain! I've gone into New Look, seen a lovely print then held it up to find that it's an unflattering material and the dress stops at your butt! I've also had hell trying to find dresses in my size in high street shops - lots of size 6-12s on the rack.

I'm a 16-18 too (more 18 now) and I really love floaty dresses, preferably with an empire line and floating over my tummy, but they don't seem to be "in" right now because I can't see ones I like anywhere? I shelled out £38 for [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] from Next, and it is nice, but it's still not what I really was after. I've never ordered online before but am considering it!

Thing is I always go to New Look because it's the only clothes shop that we have in East Grinstead Sad there has to be better out there!

I don't bother ordering online because nothing ever fits me properly (small waist, GIGANTIC boobs and bum/hips) and I can't be arsed with the returns. Though I do like that one that Sal posted.

Laura, my sister ordered that dress in a 22/24, and it was really big on her. So, that might give you some guidance. They do it cream with black spots too.

It is in a cotton type material, that just hangs down, rather than sticks to bits you don't want it to.

Thanks Sal, I would have gone for the 16 anyway, but yeah the difference between a "normal" 16 and a "plus size" 16 is stupid.

I feel your pain too, every dress I tried on recently just made me look like a squat triangle. Shocked I am currently wearing some new linen blend trousers from M&S which I bought earlier this week under duress and in desperation. They are a size 18 and whilst they fit comfortably on my generous hips and arse, the waist is massive on me so they keep falling down. I didn't buy the size 16 as I felt they looked a little tight and I had nobody with me to ask for a second opinion. Now I feel rather self conscious in them.

With linen trousers if they are too tight they would split along the seems. Can you wear a belt with them?

If you are very curvy, then you always struggle with trousers. My mum has a beyonce arse, but a tiny waist and she struggles alot.

I've given up worrying about sizes. If its comfortable and fits then it will do.

As for dresses - the last time I wore a dress was 9 years ago on my wedding day. lol

Geordie, any woman can wear trousers. I am a size 32, and I wear trousers, and shock horror leggings.

But, I wear them with long line tops, so they cover the fatty bit.

With leggings, I normally wear them with a dress I feel is too short to wear on its own. For me, thats knee length. If I wear one above the knee with it I feel proper trendy.

My hips are a 14. My thighs are a 16. Trousers are a nightmare generally. I love skirts preferably but I have horrible legs. Can't win really.

I've started jogging again recently so that should sort it out in time.

I struggle with trousers and pencil skirts - they need to be a 12 to get over my mum, but then they're lose on my waist so trousers sag and skirts twist round. I have these two A-line dresses for work from H&M that I completely adore, and I wish they'd make it in more colours and materials and I would literally wear one every day.

I have that problem too, the difference between my waist and hips is huuuuuge (something like 15 inches!!!) and if I can find trousers that fit on my hips I always have that massive gappy bit at the bottom of my back where someone could just stick their hands down there.

It does make you wonder what they base the hip to waist ratio on when bottoms don't seem to fit anyone properly!

Same problem here! What really annoys me though is trousers without belt loops - I mean, WHY?! I quite often buy trousers and then add my own (I'm reasonably competent with a sewing machine - though unfortunately not good enough to make my own trousers and so avoid these issues in the first place Smile)

I hate shopping, especially for trousers. I'm usually a 16, but I've been losing some weight recently and my current trousers and ones I try in shops are baggy. However, when I try a 14 on they're too tight (camel-toe, no thanks! Shocked )

I need to get back in the gym, or eat back into my 16's *sigh* Smile
