Buying make-up from discount retailers
Here's London Beauty Queen on buying make-up from discount retailers, or pound shops as we tend to call them: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I agree with a lot of what she says as far as foundation, mascara and other 'wet' make-up products go, but not about nail polish. I'm betting we've all here picked up a separated bottle in a bargain bin, given it a good shake, and gone on to wear it happily for many years. And then there's the link I posted about using polish thinners to restore old, dried up polishes.
Wha do you lot think?

I completely disagree with her about nail polish too Shezza. I've got some polish which must be at least 15 years old and it's still absolutely fine.

They're not necessarily old, a lot are probably factory seconds for one reason or another. I reckon she's had a bad poundland buy and gone on a one person war with the budget buy shops if they were as bad as she's making out they wouldn't be able to sell them. You're not above health and safety/trading standards laws/guidelines etc just because you're flogging it for £1 instead of £5

I think that with the 'huge amount of knowledge' that the author has amassed, we should be grateful for her article, bow to her superiority, and do exactly as she says. My arse.......
It's common sense - yes, I buy products from Poundland and the like, but I also know that Outdoor Girl is sold in there and I haven't seen it on a UK shelf for at least 17 years. I have also seen a hair dye so old that it has no '1' in the customer services dialling code number (Dover - 01304, pre 1995 it was just 0304). The hair lightener kit I bought in the 99p shop last week had instructions in every European language but English. I've seen Olay make up (lipsticks, nail polish, eye make up etc. must be at least 15 years since this was sold in the UK!) and other shockers.
There was some call a while back to print 'use by' dates on all cosmetics, whether opened or not. Not all of them are old discontinued stock and although this would sort the wheat from the chaff it would also crush any hopes we may have of finding a Nail Prism for a quid

I have a L'Oreal Jet Set polish that is around 19 years old, and it's still my go-to polish for holiday toenails. It looks just like the blue L'Oreal in the middle of this photo:

I thought it was common knowledge you go to a discount place, they have either got old stock, discontinued stock or stock from companies gone under? thats why you don't always find the same product replaced. That's what I thought. Its a £1 shop, its always a punt and sometimes it pays off.
I think she's wrong about TKMaxx - some of the colour club collections are the new ones and not damaged. I saw the new Tigi range in there just after it came out. I thought TKMaxx just bought in one off bulk's where it could - where boots and co, have to buy ranges for a certain period?

Re: Buying make-up from discount retailers
Sounds like crap to me, where nail polish is concerned anyway. I ain't that fussy, if it looks ok after a shake then it's good enough far as I'm concerned. And to be fair those I've bought from Poundland only a few were separated like that.
I can see her point where something like foundation or mascara is concerned maybe - I have really sensitive skin so I'm always careful about what I put on my face - but I've never had nail polish cause a reaction.

Yep. I'm not sure how she thinks she's surprising anyone with this bit of "news".ninjablossom wrote:I thought it was common knowledge you go to a discount place, they have either got old stock, discontinued stock or stock from companies gone under?

To be fair, she's a great blogger and does give good advice and helpful information. She obviously wrote that blogpost to help people.
However, when I read it I did dismiss it. Personally, I can tell when a product is old or new and decide whether or not to buy with that in mind. I've been in Poundland and bought a polish and then gone across the street and found the same one for £6-7 in the exact same packaging, same consistency etc.. Yes, the Poundland one is probably older but what do you expect for £1?
I have brand new polishes that separat too, but as Shezza said, you just shake them and they're fine.

Re: Buying make-up from discount retailers
I think she is as crazy as a coconut.
There is a massive difference between using a scabby old dried up mascara to using a nail varnish which has separated a little.
How does she know TKMAXX pay more for the polishes than Poundland? TKMaxx has a different audience, and a smaller customer base. We have three poundshops in my town and one TKMAXXSTORES.
As for her having a dig at Fragrance Direct, I use them loads and they are ace.
