Re: Pva glue base coat
I'm a huge fan of this method Sometimes my manicure will only last a day (still need to find the best way of applying it I guess), but I hadn't worn glitter for so long before I saw this on people's blogs because I just couldn't face the removal! So at least now I can enjoy sparkly nails, even if it is only for a day. And if I want to wear something for a week, then I'll just have to put up with the tougher removal!
Re: Pva glue base coat
I'm gonna clean and old bottle of nail envy out and see if that helps with storage and application. At the moment I'm storing the pva in a small Tupperware type tub hoping that it being air tight would let the pva keep and not go thick however it didn't work. I tried to use it yesterday and its gone hard.
Hopefully it being in a bottle will be easier. Save me having to clean the brush every time too!

I've got mine in an old polish bottle (an evil Collection 2000 green that stained through like 5 layers of other polish) and I haven't had any problems with it drying out

That's why I won't try it because I know it will happen to me just before I need to leave the house. I loathe chips but it's a bit easier to deal with than whole bare nails.
I sometimes put topcoat on instead of base coat for glitter, they remove a bit easier but survive normal nail activities.

Re: Pva glue base coat
Well I give up! I've re-done my nails 3 times since Sunday using PVA. I don't know what I'm doing wrong - maybe I buffed my nails too shiny? But they keep pinging everywhere.
Shhh - just don't let the old lady who was sat in front of me in the bus - one pinged into her hair (ooops)
And they really ping!!! Not just dropping off - they're like flipping springs!
Back to foil wrap removal for glitters - sigh

Re: Pva glue base coat
Hahahahaha oh Elise that just made me laugh so much! The only time one of mine popped off in public I didn't see where it went, but I don't think anyone was close enough for it to go in their hair... I was thinking today though that if you used pva but didn't go up to the edges of your nail, but did with your polish, then maybe it'd last longer?
Re: Pva glue base coat
Or would base coat then PVA work better? Then the pva wouldn't be against your nail but should still prevent glitter sticking?

Re: Pva glue base coat
Glad you clarified there HanSpan! I think I've read on blogs that it doesn't really work if you use basecoat first, although one I read recently said it did sort of chip off, which was still easier than using remover. I guess maybe it'd be a compromise if you want a glitter mani to last more than a day?
Re: Pva glue base coat
My experiences of PVA were similar, especially if you have your hands in water a lot.
I just use the cotton wool soak now, one cotton ball ripped into 5 pieces, then dipped in a little remover and pushed on the nail for 5 minutes. It does work quite well.

Re: Pva glue base coat
I’ve done PVA basecoats a few times now – I have one on at the minute with Nails Inc sprinkles on top. I use the Essence peel-off base coat though (which is pretty much just PVA!), rather than actual PVA glue, but here are a few tips from my experience:
- Don’t use a basecoat underneath – it makes it much harder to peel off cleanly
- A basecoat on top isn’t needed, the PVA protects from staining etc itself
- Nails must be completely bare and clean – any oils or nail treatments mean the PVA won’t stick properly
- Make sure the PVA coat is completely dry and clear before painting over
- Don’t get any on your cuticles/skin – it leaves something to lift/catch a little, so the whole thing comes off too easily. It makes clean-up of actual polish easier too, as you don’t have to worry about getting remover near the glue!
- Seche Vite seems to really mess it up and prevent clean peeling, so avoid that. I haven’t tried any other quick dry top coats
- Don’t get your nails wet for 2 hours after – I prefer to do mine at night, and ‘set’ properly while I sleep (a quick splash once your actual polish is dry won’t matter)
- Soak hands in warm water first for really easy removal!
I’ve only ever had one ‘ping’ off, and that was when I was in a rush, and had my hands in water about 30mins after doing my nails, oops! The other 9 survived pretty well though – at least that night which was what I needed. I’ve had manicures easily last 4 days though following my above rules, no chipping or peeling. The biggest risk is me poking and peeling them a little just because I know I can
I really like PVA basecoats – it takes me no time to do, as I use it instead of a normal basecoat, and taking off glitter is just soooo much easier. Which means I wear a lot more glitter

I'm trying this now. My fingertips are freezing!
Re: Pva glue base coat
Ooh well that was rather good. It was only a glitter gradient though...I'll try it out on full glitter nails in a few days!
Re: Pva glue base coat
Well I bit the bullet and purchased a bottle of PVA glue from Wilkinson for 69p yesterday. So now how the hell do I get the stuff on my nails? I don't have any old polish bottles and I assume I'll need to brush it on to get a smooth application?
Funnily enough, I was looking at the craft glitter yesterday too and wondering whether it would work on my nails. Good job I decided against it by the sounds of it!Sam wrote:Last Christmas I covered my nails in craft glitter. I don't know how long it took to get off, all I know is I almost lost the will the live.
