Polishes that weren't quite what you thought.....
I've bought a couple of Christmas polishes from some indies before Christmas and I was very excited to try them out, they looked gorgeous in the bottle and on bloggers swatches. However when I got them on I didn't think they looked all that......
The first was ninja polish no peeking. I was so excited when this was released as it looked the perfect festive polish. Bloggers had said that they'd got it opaque within 3 coats, ie no under colour. However after 3 coats on me you could still see my nail! So I removed it all and put a green underneath but it just didn't look right and I was really disappointed after saving it special for Christmas Day.
The other polish I've been disappointed with was hare polish, swanky sorriee. This was a limited edition released just before Christmas and looked stunning. I put it on for NYD, and again was a little disappointed. Was very gloopy, and was quite hard to apply and get good coverage. May try again with a grey undercoat and try to thin it a little.
What polishes have you bought and looked forward to wearing but ultimately was disappointed?

ninja polish girly floam, it looks lovely on pics of it but just came out awful
glittergal 10 to midnight - waited ages for this to come in stock, patiently waited for what seemed like forever for it to arrive and then when it did it was awful. It chipped terribly, wasn't has holo as it looks on pics and was just generally disappointing
dollish polish its a me, mario! - again, loved this and waited for ages for it to be in stock, the swatches looked great but when i tried it it was very "meh"
also - any crackle top coat

kleancolor chunky holo black. Spent ages trying to justify buying it from the US, waited ages for it to arrive - looks ok in the bottle, but it absolutely stinks and refuses to dry.
also, anything glittery that isn't as glittery as it looks in the bottle - models own mirror ball, I'm talking about you!

Ahhhh yes mirror ball!!! I went to Westfield in London to buy this specially. Bought the set and have only used 1 of them because it came out rubbish! Now I've been reminded I might eBay the other bottles, they are still sealed.....
Re: Polishes that weren't quite what you thought.....
I've also got girlie floam but its still in my untrieds stash..... Hummm won't hurry to use that then!
Re: Polishes that weren't quite what you thought.....

I was a bit underwhelmed with my GOSH Holographic Hero to be honest. In fact all the holographic polishes I've used so far are quite flat unless they are in direct sunlight or bright artificial light.

Yup agree about halos, however when in the sunlight they do look good. But I can't not use topcoat and that does dull the halo which makes wearing them quite pointless!
Re: Polishes that weren't quite what you thought.....
Have you tried doing a topcoat then another coat of the holo over the top to stop it dulling?

I've read that makes it last longer and look better. I tend to just go topcoat-less though because i'm lazy

I've only just started to realise that some colours just do not work with my skin tone. Although I love dark purples it makes my hands pale.
I still wear them away, just not with short sleeves!

I can't get on with Kleancolor either - it stays a gloopy mess. I was also underwhelmed by GOSH 549, I think I'll replace this with the Layla Mercury one as I have another Layla Holo and it's the best holo I have, and I'm going to try the coat over base tip, thanks for that!
I've actually complained this week about a Gloss & Sparkle polish that I bought as it was drastically different, many shades adrift from the shop photos:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- all of the swatches show it as a pretty shade of pale pink. When it arrived it was a deep rose and the glitters hardly stood out on the much darker than pictured background. The shop was very good - they asked for a photo so I sent a couple, and they agreed with my comments so but they contacted the maker and she was less than helpful. She claims that it's not a pale pink at all but a rosy pink, the shop copied me her response which was rather blunt. Sure looks pale to me in the pics.... I'd call my bottle antique rose. Has put me off this brand to be honest.
Similar vein but not exactly the same, I had two scratch and dent packs from Llarowe this morning and all 6 polishes were neither scratched, dented or marked in any way but I'm sure I've seen most of the bottles I recieved in the sale section recently...... (and the others were just plain crap..!)
Opening the 'mystery package' was bloody good fun though!

I've never ever ordered from her dispite being tempted, too long to wait for her to dispatch for my liking but I've always wondered bout those bags!
Re: Polishes that weren't quite what you thought.....
I got Dollish Looking for My Mr Big and Dino-mite Yoshi; Sea Lore Adella, Smitten Hillary's Dream, Impala Disco listrado (neon orangey creme) and Sabrina Sato Dreams Festa (a kind of teal pearl).
I'm wearing Gloss & Sparkle (bought before I got narked with them!) Unicorn droppings at the mo and didn't want to take it off to try any of these, diddy daughter one (aged 9) is currently polished, diddy daughter two (aged 6) has no nails as she bites them. Couldn't catch other sons (aged 2 and 4, but they do like a bit of bling) and baby was asleep (no, I wouldn't really!) so number one son aged 10 is currently sporting a fine set of mixed polished tester tips. Yoshi is his favourite.......!
I don't really like any of them much except the Dollishes and I'd say they're OK rather than fab. Interesting (if expensive) exercise though, if I hadn't have ordered some I would always have wondered!!

I Ordered on the 19th December, they arrived today so not as bad as I was expecting really. The polishes I ordered in the Femme Fatale "oh bugger, my finger slipped and I hit the add to cart button several times" restock on the 27th haven't been sent out yet.

Re: Polishes that weren't quite what you thought.....
I lusted after OPI Pirouette My Whistle for ages and spent the most I've ever spent on polish (£12) on a bottle from ebay as I absolutely had to have it and it seemed to be out of stock everywhere I looked. Turns out it's probably my least favourite polish of all of my stash (which is impressive out of over 100 bottles!). I just don't like it, regardless of what base colour I use.

I'm not sure you need to sandwich the top coat with the Layla holos. I do that trick with all the other holos I've got, but when I tried the Layla Cloudy Violet I got for xmas I found it made no difference when I added the top coat, i.e. it didn't dull the holo at all. This was using Sally Hansen Insta Dri Anti Chip top coat over the Layla, don't know whether it'll be different with other top coats.
I must say, the Layla holo I've tried has a much better formula than any other holos I've tried, goes on really smoothly with no drag at all. I was very impressed and will definitely be buying more of them.

Is it due to the nail file? From what I have heard that makes it.
I don't know as I am not allowed to try my stock
